These leafy plants were everywhere along the way. Does anybody remember what they are called? I have seen them in Queen Elizabeth park and other places in Vancouver. They are huge and line the road the whole way!

(Gunnera scombro) commonly known as Nalca
Planta también llamada pangue. Pertenece a la familia gunneracea, es jugosa, de raíz gruesa y robusta, que da origen a muchas hojas muy anchas lobuladas, venosas y ásperas por ambos lados. Crece en lugares muy húmedos y pantanosos.
La raíz contiene tanino y goma y se vende en el comercio local para infusión. Por sus propiedades tónicas y astringente, se emplea contra las hemorragias y las diarreas. Los artesanos las usan para colorear de un negro hermoso a sus tejidos y también para curtir cuero.
Las hojas bien cocidas puestas sobre la parte inferior de la espalda y riñones hacen bajar la fiebre. Los tallos se comen en ensaladas después de quitarles la primera corteza; su sabor es agridulce.
